Only 40% of the 6.5 million tyres Kiwis use every year are recycled, repurposed or used as tyre derived fuel. The rest end up stockpiled, dumped, or in landfill.
Tyrewise has been developed to work with businesses and communities across Aotearoa New Zealand to try and change this statistic.
To fund their efforts, a tyre stewardship fee is being introduced on 1 March 2024. The fee charged per vehicle (or per tyre) will cover Tyrewise's operations in an effort to correctly dispose of tyres once they reach their end-of-life.
The fees can be found here and will vary depending on the type of tyre. For example different fees will be payable for motorbike tyres vs tractor tyres.
How will I be charged this tyre stewardship fee?
If you're an importer or seller of imported vehicles you will pay tyre stewardship fees. Fees will be captured in one of three ways:
- Road-registered vehicles – fees are paid to Waka Kotahi at point of first registration;
- Non-road registered vehicles – fees are paid to Ministry for the Environment on declared imports and domestic manufacture; and
- Loose tyres – fees are paid to Ministry for the Environment on declared tyre imports and domestically manufactured tyres.
Can I charge my customers the tyre stewardship fee?
Yes any tyre stewardship fees you've already paid for a vehicle, can be recovered from a customer when that vehicle is purchased from you.
However, you must be transparent when charging any tyre stewardship fees to consumers. This means only charging a customer the exact fee amount you have already incurred, and clearly stating on any invoicing the exact tyre stewardship fee amount.
How do I charge customers a tyre stewardship fee in Motorcentral?
You can add a tyre stewardship fee to a Sale Agreement. Navigate to the Vehicles tab and select the 'Tyre Stewardship Fee' dropdown.
Select the tyre stewardship fee that applies to the vehicle you are selling and click OK.
The fee will then display in the Sale Summary and on the Vehicle Offer & Sale Agreement.
How do I advertise vehicles to consumers that will incur a tyre stewardship fee?
If a vehicle will incur a tyre stewardship fee you do not specifically need to state this when advertising a vehicle (although it is likely helpful to include in the vehicle description). Instead you can include any fee amount in your advertised on-road cost amount.
For example if you are currently advertising $395 on road costs for a vehicle and the tyre stewardship fee for that vehicle will be $38.24, we suggest changing your on-road costs value to either $433.24 or rounding down to the nearest dollar. ie. $433.
Note: you cannot charge a customer a Tyre Stewardship fee more than what you paid, hence we suggest rounding down any value, as opposed to up.
