Understanding the currency field

Shane Breckon Updated
Currency fields let you enter an amount together with its currency and tax treatment. Motorcentral then displays the value consistently and calculates tax using the selected tax type and rate.

Understanding a currency field

A currency field stores three parts:

  • Currency — the currency the amount is entered in, such as NZD or AUD.
  • Amount — the numeric value, including cents where required.
  • Tax type — how Motorcentral treats GST for that amount.

A completed field is displayed in a format such as NZD 100.50 incl.

Currency and tax options can vary by field. Some fields lock the currency or do not allow non-numeric values such as POA, Auction or Tender.

Entering a value using short codes

You can enter the currency, amount and tax type together. Spaces are optional.

On Desktop

  1. Select the currency field.
  2. Enter the currency code, amount and tax code in that order. For example, enter n100.50i for NZD 100.50 including GST.
  3. Press Tab or Enter. Motorcentral formats the entry and displays the recognised currency and tax type.

On the App

  1. Select the price field.
  2. Enter the currency code, amount and tax code in that order. For example, enter n100.50i for NZD 100.50 including GST.
  3. Select another field to apply the entry. Motorcentral formats the entry and displays the recognised currency and tax type.

Enter all three parts when you want to change the complete value. If a currency or tax code is omitted, Motorcentral may retain the field's current setting or apply a configured default.

Editing each part separately

On Desktop

  2. Choose the Currency and enter the Amount.
  3. Choose the Tax Type.
  4. If required, choose the applicable Tax Rate. Motorcentral calculates the Tax Amount.
  5. For Override Inclusive or Override Exclusive, enter the required Tax Amount.

  4. For an override tax type, enter the required Tax amount.
  5. Select the tick to apply the value.

Understanding foreign currency values

Motorcentral stores the currency selected with the amount. When a related calculation needs the value in another currency, Motorcentral uses the configured exchange rate for the source and target currencies.

Check that the displayed currency, amount and tax type are correct before saving the record.

Troubleshooting an entry

  • If the result is not what you expected, reopen the field and check all three parts: currency, amount and tax type.
  • If a short code is not recognised, use the currency-detail icon on Desktop or the cog on the App and select the value from the available options.
  • If the currency cannot be changed, that field is configured to use its existing currency.
  • If Tax amount cannot be edited, select Override Inclusive or Override Exclusive first.
